Born in Leamington Spa a long time ago Tom has been involved with music throughout his life. He has played and recorded with The Edgar Broughton Band, Doll by Doll (featuring Jackie Levin), Paul Kennerley, The Celebrated Artists Band, Wham Ba’am Thank You Ma’am and others. He ran Argonaut Studios in Maida Vale for a while under the watchful eye of Tom Newman (co-producer of Tubular Bells) and in that time recorded musicians such as: Dr John, Kevin Ayers, Mott the Hoople, Neil Innes, Viv Stanshall, Fred Frith, Jade Warrior, Rory Gallacher, Stevie Winwood, Chris Jagger, Tom Newman etc.
In the 80's Tom moved into running a publishing company through Carlin Music and began writing music for theatre. During this time he composed music for a number of main house shows at The Belgrade Theatre in Coventry and The Mystery Plays that take place in the ruins of Coventry Cathedral. He composed the music for an anti-apartheid play called ‘The Tokolosh’ which ran in Coventry and was also broadcast on Radio3. He also composed music for other radio plays including ‘Albion Towers’ (which won a Sony Award for best production) and a number of main house and fringe theatre productions.
In 1989 he and Ruth moved to Devon and from 1990 – 2000 he was Associate Musical Director. with Orchard Theatre and also started a Music Technology course at North Devon College having taught at Coventry Centre for Performing Arts (now known as Coventry University). He is leader of a Foundation Degree programme (two years of a BA hons degree) which is accredited by Plymouth University. He has also written music for short films, adverts and theme parks.
A long time Leicester City fan he has become immune to the inconsistency and sometimes mediocrity of the Foxes and starts every season with fresh hope in his heart.
